| Sharon Capeling-Alakija,
Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) will be
in Brussels, Sunday 25 November, to close the conference, "Civil Society Agenda
for the Future of Europe".
The conference will take place at the "Palais des Congres", Coudenbergstraat,3
- 1000 Brussels.
UNV is the volunteer arm of the United Nations system and is currently the
focal point for the UN International Year of Volunteers (IYV 2001). This year
has dramatically raised the profile of volunteer activity in some of the areas
of most concern today globally, such as HIV/AIDS, conflict prevention and resolution,
human rights and democracy.
Some 5,000 experienced UN Volunteers representing more than 150 nationalities
serve each year in over 140 countries. Before the crisis in Afghanistan broke
out, 15 UN Volunteers worked in the country, primarily to assist refugees while
many more are on standby today at the borders with the country.
Ms. Capeling will be reviewing the outcome of IYV 2001, the role played by
European countries in this year and the perspectives in the future for increased
stregthening of volunteer activity. European countries are expected to also participate
proactively in the UN General Assembly debate on the role of volunteers on 5 December
in New York.
Ms. Capeling is available for interviews.
